Who the Seagoing Award covers

The Seagoing Award covers employers in the seagoing industry and their employees who fit within a classification in the award.

The seagoing industry means operating vessels trading as cargo vessels, passenger vessels or operating as research vessels, which go out to sea (on voyages outside the limits of bays, harbours or rivers).

Examples of employees covered by Seagoing Award include:

  • masters
  • engineers
  • mates
  • chief integrated ratings
  • cooks, stewards and catering staffs
  • integrated ratings
  • bosuns
  • greasers
  • radio officers
  • tradespeople
  • repairers
  • donkeymen
  • able seamen
  • firemen
  • motormen
  • pumpmen
  • oiler greasers
  • OS
  • wipers
  • deckboys
  • electricians
  • electro-technical officer.

The Seagoing Award also covers labour hire businesses and their employees who are placed with an organisation in the seagoing industry.

Who the Seagoing Award doesn’t cover

The following employers and employees are not covered by the Seagoing Award:

  • clerical and administrative employees
  • maintenance contractors covered by the Manufacturing Award.

The Seagoing Award doesn’t cover an employer's business when they're covered by one of the following awards:

  • Coal Export Terminals Award
  • Dredging Award
  • Offshore Oil and Gas Award
  • Port Authorities Award
  • Stevedoring Award.

The Seagoing Award also doesn't cover sections of an employer's business when that part of the business is covered by the:

  • Marine Towage Award
  • Ports, Harbours and Enclosed Water Vessels Award
