Who the Port Authorities Award covers

The Port Authorities Award covers employers who operate ports and their employees who fit within the classifications of this award.

Port operators have a statutory or contractual right to manage or control ports, provide access to ports and provide port services.

Port services includes:

  • infrastructure management and integration
  • communications
  • navigation services (including channel marking and management and pilot transfers)
  • landside logistics (including loading and unloading facilities)
  • mooring and gangways
  • sewage and waste disposal
  • security services
  • emergency response
  • dredging
  • surveying
  • passenger services.

Examples of employees covered by the Port Authorities Award includes:

  • mooring deckhands
  • fork lift operators
  • bob cat operators
  • line markers
  • plant operators
  • dredge maintenance workers
  • security officers
  • clerical and administrative employees
  • master class IV
  • leading hands and supervisors
  • marine pilots.

The Port Authorities Award also covers labour hire businesses and their employees who are placed with an organisation who operates ports.

Who the Port Authorities Award doesn't cover

The following employers and employees are not covered by the Port Authorities Award:

  • maintenance contractors covered by the Manufacturing and Electrical Awards
  • employees who only load, unload, store and transport cargo at ports.
