Who the Stevedoring Award covers

The Stevedoring Award covers employers in the stevedoring industry and their employees who fit within the classifications of the award.

The stevedoring industry means loading and unloading cargo into or from a ship. It includes transporting and storing cargo at or next to a wharf.

Wharfs includes:

  • piers
  • jetties
  • ramps

and sheds, storage or staking areas that makes up part of the wharf area where stevedoring activities are done.

Examples of employees covered by the Stevedoring Award includes:

  • stevedoring employees who:
    • use fork lifts, bob cats or excavators
    • pack and unpack containers
    • lash and unlash
    • service basic equipment
    • perform clerical and administrative work
    • operate ship gears
    • perform security work
    • monitor and control refrigeration plant operations
    • perform trades qualified work
    • supervise
  • maintenance tradespeople.

The Stevedoring Award also covers labour hire businesses and their employees who are places within an organisation in the stevedoring industry.

Who the Stevedoring Award doesn't cover

The following employers and employees are not covered by the Stevedoring Award:

  • maintenance contractors covered by the Manufacturing Award or the Electrical Award
  • employers who operate ports.

The Stevedoring Award doesn't cover employers and employees when they are covered by one of the following awards:

  • Port Authorities Award
  • Coal Export Terminals Award
  • Sugar Award.
