Pay periods and roster cycles in the Pharmacy Award
A full-time employee’s hours of work can be rostered to be an average of:
- 38 hours per week, or
- 76 hours over two weeks.
A roster cycle generally coincides with the pay period. However, a workplace can roster fortnightly and pay weekly.
Full-time employees
When a workplace rosters fortnightly but pays weekly, a full-time employee gets paid at least their 38 ordinary hours in the first pay period, regardless of the actual number of hours worked.

Paid rest breaks in the Seafood Award
All employees, including part-time and casual employees, get 2 paid 10 minute rest breaks per day or shift. The rest breaks count as time worked.
There’s no minimum number of hours an employee has to work to get the rest breaks.
The employer decides what time the rest breaks are taken.
Example
Artie is a casual employee and works a 3 hour shift from 8am to 11am.
Artie is entitled to 2 paid 10 minute rest breaks during their shift.
Artie’s employer decides their rest breaks should be at 9am and 10am.
