Who the Oil Refining and Manufacturing Award covers

The Oil Refining and Manufacturing Award covers employers in the oil refining and manufacturing industry and their employees who fit within a classification in the award.

The oil refining and manufacturing industry means:

  • refining crude oil
  • manufacturing and blending petroleum products including:
    • aviation fuels
    • bitumen
    • diesel
    • ethylene
    • gasoline
    • liquefied petroleum gas
    • lubricant base oils, greases and other related product lines
    • solvents
  • pipeline distribution of oil or petroleum products to or from a terminal or storage facility that is owned and operated by a refinery employer or related company
  • storing bulk liquid at a bulk liquid terminal, if the employer was bound to the Oil and Gas Industry Bulk Liquid Terminals Award 2002 [AP822096] prior to 1 January 2010.

Examples of employees covered by the Oil Refining and Manufacturing Award include:

  • operators who work in:
  • refinery operations
  • lubricants/bitumen plants and terminals
  • specialist blenders
  • maintenance employees
  • clerical and administrative employees.

The Oil Refining and Manufacturing Award also covers labour hire businesses and their employees who are placed with an organisation in the oil refining and manufacturing industry.

Who the Oil Refining and Manufacturing Award doesn’t cover

The following employers and employees are not covered by the Oil Refining and Manufacturing Award:

  • managerial employees
  • security officers
  • catering employees
  • cleaners
  • employees who work as deck officers, marine engineer officers, ratings or catering staff on any vessel
  • professional divers
  • employees in the aviation industry
  • employees covered by the Hydrocarbons (Upstream) Award who are engaged in:
    • exploration and/or drilling for hydrocarbons
    • preparatory work or development of an oil or gas field
    • extraction, separation, or production of hydrocarbons, or
    • any associated work
  • employees who commission, service, maintain (including mechanical, electrical, fabricating or engineering and preparatory work), modify, upgrade or repair facilities, plant and equipment (unless it is work performed by a refinery operator)
  • information technology professionals
  • professional engineers
  • professional scientists.
