Who the Gas Award covers

The Gas Award covers employer in the gas industry and their employees who fit within the classifications of the award.

The gas industry means the:

  • transmitting
  • distributing
  • wholesaling, and
  • retailing

of gas to industrial, commercial and domestic consumers.

Examples of employees covered by the Gas Award includes:

  • clerical and administrative workers
  • plant maintenance employees
  • meter readers and repairers
  • store and warehouse workers
  • accounts collectors
  • licenced or trade qualified servicepersons
  • qualified mains layers
  • mains layer assistants
  • qualified gas installers.

The Gas Award also covers labour hire businesses and their employees who are placed with an organisation in the gas industry.

Who the Gas Award doesn't cover

The following employers and employees are not covered by the Gas Award:

  • employees in managerial positions
  • employers whose core business is work covered by the Electrical Power Award in the electrical power industry, that involves the retail, marketing and supply of gas as a result of the work they do
  • employers dealing with the manufacturing, processing, transportation, storage, distribution, marketing and sale of:
    • liquefied petroleum (LP) gas, as well as employers who also treat, prepare, extract and separate:
      • industrial gases
      • medical gases, or
      • special gases
  • drivers who transport gas.

The Gas Award doesn't cover employers and employees when they are covered by one of the following awards:

  • Hydrocarbons (Upstream) Award
  • Road Transport Award.
