Who the Aluminium Award covers

The Aluminium Award covers employers in the aluminium industry and their employees who fit within the classifications of the award.

The aluminium industry means bauxite operations, and the treatment of bauxite, alumina, aluminium or any of their derivatives, including:

  • resource drilling, extracting, rehabilitation work and treatment of bauxite
  • processing, refining, smelting, melting, casting and rolling operations linked with the treatment of bauxite, alumina, aluminium and any of their derivatives
  • work that is associated with any of the above, that includes (but is not limited to):
  • generating and/or transmitting power and/or steam
  • handling bulk materials at a wharf or any load out/in facility, including the loading and unloading of bauxite, alumina and other bulk materials
  • servicing, maintaining (including mechanical, electrical, fabricating or engineering) or repairing of plant and equipment used in those activities.

Examples of employees covered by the Aluminium Award:

  • mining truck operators
  • plant machinery and other mobile equipment operators
  • sample analysers
  • trade qualified mechanics / electrical technicians
  • security officers and caterers / cleaners in accommodation who are employed by an aluminium industry employer.

The Aluminium Award also covers labour hire businesses and their employees who are placed with an organisation in the aluminium industry.

Who the Aluminium Award doesn't cover

The following employers and employees are not covered by the Aluminium Award:

  • employers who deal with aluminium as part of other manufacturing operations that are covered by the Manufacturing Award
  • caterers and cleaners in accommodation who are not employed by an aluminium industry employer
  • clerical and administrative employees
  • employees engaged in managerial, professional, scientific and senior supervisory roles
  • employees in paraprofessional technical positions
  • security officers not employed by an aluminium industry employer
  • employees who work in the head office or town office.
