Who the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Health Award covers

The Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Health Award covers employers in the Aboriginal community controlled health services industry and their employees who fit within the classifications of the award. It also covers Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander health workers and health practitioners and their employers on an occupational basis. It covers those who work in private practice.

Aboriginal community controlled health services are incorporated Aboriginal organisations, started and based in an Aboriginal community. They deliver all-inclusive and culturally appropriate health and well-being services to the Aboriginal community.

These services are governed by a representative elected by the local Aboriginal community from the Aboriginal Board of Management.

Examples of employees covered by this award include:

  • Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander health workers
  • clerical and administrative employees
  • dental assistants
  • dental therapists
  • cleaners
  • drivers
  • caretakers.

The Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Health Award also covers labour hire businesses and their employees who:

  • are placed within an organisation in the Aboriginal community controlled health services industry, or
  • work as Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander health workers or health practitioners.

The same applies to group training services and their trainees.

Who the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Health Award doesn’t cover

Examples of employees not covered by the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Health Award include:

  • medical practitioners (doctors)
  • nurses.
