Who the Joinery Award covers
The Joinery Award covers employers in the joinery and building trades industries and their employees who fit within the classifications of the award.
Employees are also covered if they work in particular jobs covered by the Joinery Award, and their employer is not covered by another award with a more appropriate classification.
The joinery and building trade industry means:
- joinery work
- shopfitting
- prefabricated building
- stonemasonry
- glass and glazing contracting
- glass and glazing work.
The particular jobs mentioned in the award are:
- carver
- joiner
- carpenter
- stonemason
- plasterer
- signwriter
- painter
- letter cutter.
Examples of employers and employees covered by the Joinery Award include:
- joinery shops who prepare, decorate and assemble joinery, mainly in timber
- shopfitters
- stair-builders who work off site
- general and factory hands
- assemblers
- machine operators
- carpenters and joiners
- stonemasons
- prefab tradespersons
- painters
- plasterers
- glaziers
- glass cutters
- signwriters
- carvers.
The Joinery Award also covers labour hire businesses and their employees who are placed with an organisation within the joinery and building trades industry.

Who the Joinery Award doesn't cover
The following types of employers are not covered by the Joinery Award:
- employers engaged in the manufacture of glass from raw materials
- in-built furniture manufacturers eg. kitchen cabinets, bathroom vanities, wardrobes
- door and window frame manufacturers
- employers engaged in construction, alteration or installation of cabinetry in an on-site work environment
- employers who are not in the following industries:
- Joinery work
- Shopfitting
- Prefabricated building
- Stonemasonry
- Glass and glazing contracting
- Glass and glazing work.
The Joinery Award doesn’t cover employers and employees when they are covered by one of the following awards:
- Building and Construction Award
- Vehicle Award.
The Joinery Award doesn’t cover employees who mainly do clerical and administrative work.
