Who the Fire Fighting Award covers

The Fire Fighting Award covers employers in the fire fighting industry and their employees who fit within the classifications of the award.

The fire fighting industry means:

  • suppressing and extinguishing fires
  • providing rescue services (other than by police, ambulance, State Emergency Service or military) at the scene of accidents, explosions or other emergencies
  • handling spillages of toxic or hazardous materials in emergency situations (other than in a marine environment or by an employer in relation to their own property, premises or product)
  • preventing fires and the sale, supply, installation, maintenance, repair and/or inspection of fire protection equipment (other than fixed or semi fixed fire protection systems) by an employer in the fire fighting industry.

Examples of employees covered by the Fire Fighting Award includes:

  • firefighting recruits
  • firefighters
  • qualified firefighters
  • leading firefighters
  • station officers
  • fire service communication controllers.

Who the Fire Fighting Award doesn't cover

The following employees are not covered by the Fire Fighting Award:

  • clerical and administrative workers
  • contract cleaners and security officers
  • employees who install fire alarm systems and fire sprinklers.
