Who the Salt Award covers

The Salt Award covers employers in the salt industry, and their employees who fit within the classifications of the award.

The salt industry means:

  • producing, gathering, extracting, harvesting, storing, distributing, packaging, manufacturing, treating, refining, brine handling, processing, transporting, shipping and conveying salt and related work
  • servicing, maintaining (including mechanical, electrical, fabricating or engineering or repairing of plant and equipment or camp facilities used in the activities above, by employees who mainly work in the salt industry

Examples of employees covered by the Salt Award include:

  • services employees such as:
    • labourers
    • plant and equipment operators
    • maintenance workers
    • warehouse employees
    • on-site caterers, cleaners and security officers
    • laboratory personnel (not degree qualified)
  • production and haulage employees
  • processing employees
  • maintenance trades employees.

The Salt Award also covers temporary labour services used in the salt industry by temporary labour personnel principally engaged to perform work at salt industry locations.

Who the Salt Award doesn’t cover

The following employers and employees are not covered by the Salt Award:

  • those who are covered by the Manufacturing Award (eg. people who mainly manufacture things other than salt)
  • clerical and administrative employees.
