Who the Surveying Award covers
The Surveying Award covers employers who employ professional surveyors and other employees, who fit within the classifications of the award.
Professional surveyors are employees who are qualified to carry out professional surveying duties. Professional surveyors include:
- graduate surveyors
- licensed/registered surveyors
- employees whose field of surveying doesn’t require formal registration.
Professional surveying duties means the type of duties that, for an employee to perform them appropriately, would require them to have a graduate qualification sufficient for admission as an Associate member of the Surveying and Spatial Sciences Institute.
Employees covered by the Surveying Award are:
- surveyors
- survey technicians
- survey assistants
- graduate surveyors
- licensed/registered surveyors.
Surveying means:
- determining the form, contour, position, area, height, depth or any other similar particulars of any part of the earth’s surface
- planning the position or length and direction of bounding lines of any part of the earth’s surface
- obtaining a plan of plans of any part of the earth’s surface
- acquiring, managing, interpreting and analysing data and any associated consulting, design and plan preparation
- the portrayal and dissemination of information in any form (including written, graphical, numerical, digital, photographic or magnetic media) and any associated consulting, design and plan preparation
- administration, management and technical support activities (when performed by employees in classifications of the award).
The Surveying Award also covers labour hire businesses and their employees who are professional surveyors placed with an organisation.

Who the Surveying Award doesn't cover
The following employers and employees are not covered by the Surveying Award:
- local government employers
- architects
- town planners employed in the town planning industry.
