An award, enterprise agreement or other registered agreement can have a specific definition of what a shiftworker is, and what type of shifts they can work.

Building and Construction Award
Based on what you've told us, it looks like you're covered by the Building and Construction General On-site Award [MA000020].
General building and construction or metal and engineering construction employees
A shiftworker in the general building and construction sector or the metal and engineering construction sector can work one of the following shifts:
- an early morning shift - starts at or after 11pm and before 4:30am
- a morning shift - starts at or after 4.30am and before 6am
- an early afternoon shift - starts at or after 11am and before 1pm
- an afternoon shift - starts at or after 1pm and before 3pm
- a night shift - starts at or after 3pm and before 11pm.
An employee who has to work shiftwork has to be given at least 48 hours notice.
Civil construction employees
A shiftworker in the civil construction sector can work one of the following shifts:
- day shift - starts at or after 6am and before 10am
- afternoon shift - starts at or after 10am and before 8pm
- night shift - starts at or after 8pm and before 6am
- permanent night shift - a night shift that doesn’t rotate with other shifts and continues for at least 4 weeks in a row.
