What we offer
We provide free, reliable information about workplace rights and obligations across Australian workplaces. As the national workplace relations regulator, we are a trusted and reliable source for this information.
Artificial intelligence (AI) tools are becoming a common way for people to look for answers to their workplace questions. While AI tools can be a useful starting point for general research, they can also provide information that is incorrect, incomplete, outdated, or not relevant to Australian workplaces.
Tip: What we mean when we say ‘AI tools’
There are a range of AI tools that people may use. For example, Google search summaries (also known as AI overviews) or ChatGPT.
What you need to know about using AI
AI tools typically generate responses by drawing on a wide range of sources. AI answers can mix information from unverified sources and different industries, countries and time periods.
If you use AI, be aware that AI-generated information may:
- not reflect Australian workplace laws
- combine information from both reliable and unreliable sources and present it as factual
- not be checked or approved by a regulator
- be outdated, incomplete or inaccurate
- include information about employment law changes that have not yet started.
Example: Employee using AI to answer workplace questions
Sam had a question about his award. He found an answer using information from a Google AI search summary. This led Sam to believe he wasn’t being paid correctly.
Sam discussed what he had found with his employer, Talia.
Using our website, together Talia and Sam confirmed that Sam was being paid correctly.
Talia provided Sam with information about upcoming changes to his award. Sam realised that the AI-generated information he had found was about these changes and not about his current entitlements.
Sam decided to subscribe to our email updates to keep up to date with changes to his award. He plans to come back when the award changes to check his pay again using our website’s Pay and Conditions Tool.
What to do
When you’re looking for answers on a workplace problem or question, we recommend that you:
- seek information directly from us or from other trusted sources
- use AI as a starting point only, not as a final source of advice
- don’t rely solely on AI for advice about workplace entitlements and obligations.
Tip: Other trusted sources
Examples of other trusted sources can include other government bodies, unions (for employees) or employer associations.
