Annual Wage Review 2020

The Fair Work Commission has announced a 1.75% increase to minimum wages following its 2020 Annual Wage Review. The increase applies to awards in 3 stages, with the first group starting from the first full pay period on or after 1 July 2020. This group includes frontline health care and social assistance workers, teachers and child care employees, other essential services and the National Minimum Wage.

A junior is an employee under 21 years of age. Use our Pay Calculator to calculate junior pay rates.

Juniors get paid a percentage of the relevant adult pay rate unless the award, enterprise agreement or other registered agreement doesn't have junior rates.

The percentages that apply are usually based on the employee’s age and increase on their next birthday. 

Example: Junior pay rate increases

Carly is 17 years old and works in a shop. She’s entitled to 60% of the adult pay rate under her award. She turns 18 on 22 March. From 22 March she’s entitled to 70% of the adult pay rate.

Building and Construction Award

Based on what you've told us, it looks like you're covered by the Building and Construction General On-site Award [MA000020].

There are no junior pay rates in the Building and Construction Award.

Juniors have to be paid the relevant pay rate for their classification. This means that all employees (except trainees and apprentices) are entitled to the same minimum rate regardless of their age.
