Who the Teachers Award covers

The Teachers Award covers employers in the:

  • school education industry, or
  • children’s services and early childhood education industries.

It also covers employees of these employers who fit within the classifications of the award.

The school education industry means providing education, including preschool or early childhood education, in:

  • a school registered or accredited under the relevant authority in each State or Territory, or
  • an early childhood service operated by a school.

The children’s services and early childhood education industry includes:

  • long day care centres
  • occasional care services
  • nurseries
  • childcare centres
  • day care facilities
  • family based childcare centres
  • out-of-school hours care
  • vacation care
  • in-home care
  • kindergartens
  • preschools and
  • early childhood intervention programs.

Examples of employers and employees covered by the Teachers Award:

  • primary schools
  • secondary schools
  • qualified teachers
  • unqualified teachers working in a registered school
  • teachers appointed as Directors in the children’s services and early childhood education industries.

The Teachers Award also covers labour hire businesses and their employees who are placed with an organisation in the school education, children’s services and early childhood education industries.

Who the Teachers Award doesn't cover

The following employees are not covered by the Teachers Award, unless they are a teacher of the school curriculum or part of the teaching staff:

  • a person employed to provide religious instruction, supervision of prayer or to undertake other religious duties
  • employees who facilitate early childhood physical education programs
  • a sports coach, assistant or trainer, or
  • a person employed solely to instruct students individually (for example, in music, language, dance or similar) and/or small group such as student choir, band, string ensemble or similar.

The Teachers Award does not cover principals, vice principals or deputy principals.

The Teachers Award also does not cover the following employees, unless they're university qualified in early childhood teaching:

  • teachers aides or integration aides
  • classroom assistants
  • director or supervisors

who work in or in connection with:

  • childcare
  • preschools
  • long day care centres
  • child minding centres or
  • out-of-school hours care services.
