Communicating
To effectively communicate with your employees it is important that you:
- take the time to communicate regularly with your employees
- use plain, clear language
- think about what, when and how you communicate - tailor your approach to suit your audience
- encourage employees to provide feedback and listen to their ideas – communication goes both ways!
Complying
To effectively manage your employees and meet your legal obligations it is important that you:
- check your employees are paid at least the minimum amount required for their job
- understand the award or agreement conditions that apply in your workplace
- know when your employees are entitled to take leave and respond appropriately to leave requests
- keep records and issue pay slips within one day of payment.
Motivating
To effectively manage and motivate your employees it is important that you:
- help employees understand the business’ goals and how they contribution to its success
- train, develop and challenge employees to continually improve their skills
- recognise and reward good performance
- personally role model the work ethic, values and behaviours you want in your workplace.
Problem solving
To effectively manage your employees and prevent problems from escalating it is important that you:
- deal with issues, complaints and conflicts calmly and promptly
- listen and seek to understand the cause of a problem before deciding on a solution
- work with employees to resolve problems
- create a work environment in which employees feel comfortable reporting and discussing problems.
