Rostered days off

A rostered day off (RDO) is a day in a roster period that an employee doesn't have to work.

An employee's day off can be paid or unpaid, depending on how RDOs are set out in an award or registered agreement.

When RDOs are paid, it is because an employee has worked extra hours that add up over a set period of time and this is taken as an RDO.

Vehicle Award

Based on what you've told us, it looks like you're covered by the Vehicle Manufacturing, Repair, Services and Retail Award 2010 [MA000089].

Employees in the vehicle manufacturing sector can accumulate RDOs during a roster period. Employees have to be told 4 weeks in advance when their RDO will be during that period.

An employer has to arrange RDOs so that they are taken on Fridays or Mondays.

An employer and employee can agree to:

  • less than 4 weeks advanced notice to be given for an RDO
  • substituting RDOs
  • banking RDOs
  • taking RDOs at a different time to the time set out in the roster.

Employees who aren't in the vehicle manufacturing sector don't have an RDO system set out in the award. These employees still get days off that they aren't rostered to work, however these days aren't paid.
