Rostered days off

A rostered day off (RDO) is a day in a roster period that an employee doesn't have to work.

An employee's day off can be paid or unpaid, depending on how RDOs are set out in an award or registered agreement.

When RDOs are paid, it is because an employee has worked extra hours that add up over a set period of time and this is taken as an RDO.

Retail Award

Based on what you've told us, it looks like you're covered by the General Retail Industry Award 2010 [MA000004].

Employees who work a 38 hour week can, during a 4 week cycle:

  • have a fixed RDO
  • have a rotating RDO
  • accumulate an RDO.

Employees who accumulate RDOs are entitled to accumulate a maximum of 5 days off over 5 roster cycles.

An employer may agree with the majority of employees to substitute an RDO for another day because of:

  • machinery breakdown
  • failure or shortage of electrical power
  • requirements of the business due to rush orders or
  • an emergency situation.

An employee and employer can also agree to bank up to 5 days off owing to them in any 1 year. The banked days may be taken at a time that is convenient to both the employer and employee.
