Strong pass rate for take-away outlets in Queensland food courts

Almost three quarters of take-away outlets in Queensland food courts are complying with workplace laws, random audits by the Fair Work Ombudsman have revealed.
Fair Work inspectors recently checked the books of 129 businesses across the State following a rise in complaints from workers at food courts in Brisbane.
Fair Work Ombudsman Nicholas Wilson released the results of the targeted campaign today during a visit to the Tropical North.
He is in Townsville today and Cairns tomorrow.
Mr Wilson says the compliance rate for businesses scrutinised in Townsville is pleasing.
“Of the 10 employers we audited in Townsville, eight were found to be complying with their obligations,” he said.
“Contraventions were identified at the remaining two businesses and our inspectors will work with them to ensure these matters are rectified and processes are put in place to ensure they are not repeated in future.”
Mr Wilson said that of 128 audits finalised State-wide so far, 94 employers (73 per cent) were found to be compliant.
One business remains under investigation.
Thirty-four of the non-franchise take-away food outlets recorded breaches, with 26 of them being asked to repay a total of $45,257 in underpaid wages and entitlements to a total of 177 staff.
The breakdown is as follows:
- $20,500 for 93 Brisbane employees,
- $14,600 for 19 Dalby employees,
- $4500 for 15 Rockhampton employees,
- $2900 for 24 Toowoomba employees,
- $1400 for 21 Cairns employees, and
- $1300 for five Gold Coast employees.
Fair Work inspectors began checking record-keeping, pay-slip practices and minimum pay rates late last year. The sector was earmarked following a rise in complaints and the fact it typically employs vulnerable workers, such as young people and those from a non-English speaking background.
