Campaign results for WA’s Peel Region

31 August 2011

Almost 60 per cent of businesses randomly audited in Western Australia’s Peel Region are compliant with workplace laws, the Fair Work Ombudsman has revealed.

Fair Work inspectors recently finished checking the books of 41 businesses around Baldivis, Mandurah, Harvey, Secret Harbour and Pinjarra.

Of 40 audits finalised, 23 employers (57 per cent) were found to be compliant.

Seventeen businesses (43 per cent) recorded contraventions related to payslips or the underpayment of entitlements.

One business remains under investigation.

The campaign resulted in more than $13,500 being recovered for 42 employees - $8200 for 36 workers at Mandurah, $5200 for five workers in Harvey and $140 for one worker at Pinjarra.

Fair Work Ombudsman Nicholas Wilson says a major aim of the campaign was to improve awareness of the Fair Work Ombudsman’s role and function.

“Inspectors provided local employers with tips about how to ensure they are compliant with workplace laws, including Modern Awards and the National Employment Standards,” he said.

“It is also important regional workers understand there is an Agency they can turn to if they have concerns about their entitlements or discrimination in the workplace.”
