Tweed Heads businesses back-pay workers $35,500 after Fair Work Ombudsman intervenes

The Fair Work Ombudsman has recently recovered more than $35,500 for three Tweed Heads workers who were underpaid.

The largest amount was $15,300 for a truck driver who did not receive full severance pay or long service leave entitlements.

After Fair Work inspectors contacted the driver’s employer to discuss its obligations, the company immediately back-paid the man.

Other recoveries include:

  • $12,200 for a Banora Point caretaker underpaid the minimum hourly rate, casual leave loading and allowances, and
  • $8100 for a Tweed Heads manager underpaid wages in lieu of notice and annual leave.

Fair Work Ombudsman Executive Director Michael Campbell says that given the employers co-operated and voluntarily reimbursed the money, there will be no further action against the companies.

“We have a flexible, fair approach and our preference is always to work with employers to educate them and help them voluntarily rectify any non-compliance issues we identify,” Mr Campbell said.

The Fair Work Ombudsman can assist workplace participants to understand new laws, the National Employment Standards and Modern Awards.
