Spotlight on regional transport companies

The Fair Work Ombudsman today announced a new education and compliance campaign focused on the transport industry in regional Victoria.

The Agency has written to dozens of employers to advise them of the campaign and provide educational materials about workplace laws.

Fair Work inspectors will now begin the task of randomly selecting up to 50 businesses for audit to ensure they are complying with record-keeping and pay slip obligations.

Transport companies will be selected from Bendigo, Castlemaine, Ballarat, Horsham, Warrnambool, Portland, Hamilton, Camperdown, Shepparton, Colac, Kyneton, St Arnaud, Echuca, Swan Hill, Mildura, Seymour, Benalla, Wodonga, Wangaratta, Leongatha, Morwell, Bairnsdale, Healesville, Kilmore and Geelong.

Early next year, inspectors will select another list of employers for investigation to ensure they are paying workers the correct wage rates, penalty rates and allowances. 

Fair Work Ombudsman Executive Director Michael Campbell is urging employers to positively embrace the campaign as an opportunity to improve their compliance with workplace laws.

He says the objective is to help employers understand workplace laws, including Modern Awards and minimum National Employment Standards.

The campaign aims to ensure more country employers understand their obligations to their employees and to raise awareness of the Fair Work Ombudsman’s role.

The Fair Work Ombudsman has a range of user-friendly resources on its website to assist employers to comply with workplace laws and operate their workplace at best practice.

Resources for small business on include a number of industry-specific web pages, payslip and record-keeping templates, a self-audit checklist, template letters and fact sheets on dozens of topics including leave, industrial action, public holidays, enterprise bargaining, gender pay equality and family-friendly workplaces.

As well as Online resources, the Fair Work Ombudsman has more than 200 advisers available to speak with employers and workers with questions on its Fair Work Infoline on 13 13 94 from 8am-6pm weekdays.

The Fair Work Ombudsman also has Best Practice Guides which have been developed to assist employers make better use of the provisions of the Fair Work Act and better understand other aspects of workplace laws.

The guides cover work and family, consultation and co-operation, individual flexibility arrangements, employing young workers, gender pay equity, small business, workplace privacy, managing underperformance, effective dispute resolution and improving workplace productivity.
