Fair Work Ombudsman releases results of Hamilton targeted campaign

15 June 2010

Almost 60 per cent of Hamilton employers are complying with federal workplace laws, a Fair Work Ombudsman campaign has found.

Fair Work inspectors visited more than 100 Hamilton businesses in November last year to speak with employers and provide them with educative materials on workplace laws.

Inspectors randomly selected 56 businesses for audit, mainly in the retail and service industries.

Thirty-three (59 per cent) of those were fully compliant with workplace relations laws, while 23 (41 per cent) recorded contraventions.

Four businesses were found to have underpaid 13 workers a total of $5765. The underpayments were of minimum hourly rates, weekend penalty rates and annual leave entitlements.

Inspectors identified 19 businesses with contraventions relating to record-keeping and payslips.

Fair Work Ombudsman Executive-Director Michael Campbell says it is pleasing that all employers with contraventions co-operated with inspectors and voluntarily rectified their non-compliance issues.

“Inspectors assisted employers to put processes in place to ensure these breaches do not occur in the future,” he said.

Mr Campbell said the Hamilton visits were part of a Victoria-wide campaign aimed at educating employers located in retail/shopping centres and industrial parks.

The Fair Work Ombudsman has a number of tools on its website - www.fwo.gov.au - to assist employees and employers to check minimum rates of pay, including Paycheck. There are also templates for time-and-wages sheets, payslips and other types of employment records.

Small to medium-sized businesses without human resources staff can also ensure they are better equipped when hiring, managing and dismissing employees by using free template employment documentation with step-by-step instructions or accessing a series of Best Practice Guides.

Employers or employees seeking assistance or further information can also contact the Fair Work Infoline on 13 13 94 from 8am-6pm weekdays. For translations, call 13 14 50.
