Fair Work inspectors target Reservoir and Coburg for audits

28 April 2010

The Fair Work Ombudsman will audit more than 50 businesses in the Melbourne suburbs of Reservoir and Coburg today and tomorrow.

Businesses will be randomly selected from a range of industries, but with a particular focus on industrial areas.

Employers will be asked to supply employment records, such as time-and-wages sheets, so inspectors can check they are paying employees their full entitlements.

Inspectors will also check whether employers are complying with their legal obligations in relation to record-keeping and issuing of pay slips.

This week's audits follow similar checks on 70 Braeside businesses earlier this month.

Fair Work Ombudsman Executive Director Michael Campbell says the activity is part of a rolling campaign in Victoria focused on shopping strips and industrial precincts.

"Where we identify non-compliance, our preference will be to provide employers with information and assistance to help them voluntarily rectify any issues," Mr Campbell said.

"It is only in cases where breaches are blatant or employers refuse to co-operate that we will consider taking further action."

Mr Campbell says educating employers about recent changes to Australia's workplace relations laws will be an important part of the campaign.

"Inspectors will discuss the changes with employers and provide each employer they visit with an information pack containing fact sheets, guides and advice about how to obtain any further information they need," he said.

Mr Campbell says employers or employees seeking up-to-date information on wage rates and conditions should contact the Fair Work Infoline on 13 13 94 or visit www.fwo.gov.au For translations call 13 14 50.

The website also contains templates to help employers better manage employment records and payslips.
