Once the Fair Work Ombudsman identifies a potential employee who is entitled to unclaimed wages, a Fair Work Ombudsman officer will attempt to make contact by a variety of methods. You may be contacted by letter, email or telephone.
The Fair Work Ombudsman also works closely with other government agencies and consulates where necessary to assist in locating workers who may be visa holders.
How will I know if contact is from the Fair Work Ombudsman?
The Fair Work Ombudsman may ask a series of questions in order to determine that you are an employee entitled to money held in consolidated revenue. These questions are necessary in order to ensure that money is distributed accurately.
If at any stage you are concerned about providing information to the caller, you may ask the caller to identify themselves and their position in the agency, and Call us to confirm the person is a Fair Work Ombudsman employee.
Remember that the Fair Work Ombudsman:
- will never ask you to make a payment before any funds will be released to you
- will never ask for your credit card details
- will never ask you to provide personal information to a party outside of the Fair Work Ombudsman (e.g. Western Union)
- will confirm you are the person who is owed the outstanding wages and entitlements by asking questions in relation to your employment history
- will ask you to verify your identity prior to payment being made
- will provide you with the option of being paid by either cheque or direct deposit into your chosen bank account.
