Conditions of employment

Minimum employment conditions, for employees in the national workplace relations system, are covered by the National Employment Standards (NES). Further conditions can be set by awards, agreements and other industrial instruments. You can find information about these conditions in the fact sheets below.

Minimum wages

The national minimum wage is determined by the Minimum Wage Panel of Fair Work Australia each year and generally takes effect on 1 July.

Modern awards govern the pay and conditions for most industries covered by the national workplace relations system.

Termination of employment

The Fair Work Ombudsman educates employers and employees of their rights and obligations on termination, including redundancy, resignation or dismissal. Fair Work Australia is responsible for unfair dismissals and unlawful termination matters.

Workplace laws go national

From 1 January 2010, the national workplace relations system applied to most state employees previously governed by state workplace relations laws.
