Penalty rates in PayCheck Plus

The model transitional provisions in most modern awards phase in changes to pay and penalty rates as people move from pre-modern awards to modern awards.

To calculate any changes in penalty rates, you need to know the penalty rates from your modern award as well as the penalty rates from your pre-modern award.

PayCheck Plus does not require you to enter your own penalty rates from your pre-modern and modern awards. The PayCheck Plus system works this out for you.

When you get to the point of choosing your penalty rates in PayCheck Plus, there will usually be a series of ‘penalty pairs’ on this screen. Penalty pairs are common modern and pre-modern award penalty rates that apply for overlapping periods of time. All you will need to do is identify the hours than an employee would be working and check to see if a ‘penalty pair’ applies for the same hours of work.

Example

John was entitled to a Saturday penalty rate from 9am until 12 noon under his pre-modern award. He is also entitled to a Saturday penalty rate under his modern award that applies from 10am until 4pm.

The ‘penalty pair’ available for selection in PayCheck Plus will apply on Saturdays between 10am and 12 noon.

If you cannot find a penalty pair that applies for the hours you wish to calculate, you can pair your own penalties.
