Base rate calculators

The Base Rate Calculators on this page help you work out the base rates of pay for people covered by awards in the building and plumbing industries that aren't in PayCheck Plus.

Before you use these calculators, you should use PayCheck Plus to find rates of pay. If PayCheck Plus doesn't have rates for you, check the calculators below to see if one applies.

You can Contact us if you have any questions.

Until July 2014, minimum rates, penalties and loadings under modern awards are worked out by comparing the rates in modern awards to those in the pre-modern award. You can use Award Finder to find your pre-modern award.

What are Base Rate Calculators?

Base Rate Calculators help you work out the base rate of pay for people in the building and plumbing industries that are covered by awards or classifications that aren't in PayCheck Plus.

Starting from 1 July 2010, rates of pay, penalties and loadings in modern awards are being phased in over 4 years. This means that until 1 July 2014, you need to look at the pre-modern award as well as the modern award to find the minimum rates of pay.

You can use the base rate calculators to work out an employee's current base rate. All you need to do is choose the employee's classification and entitlements.

How do I use a Base Rate Calculator?

Step 1

Open the Base Rate Calculator that covers the employee's type of work and the employer's business. If you're not sure, you can Contact us for help.

Step 2

Find the relevant pre-modern award that applied before 1 January 2010.

Step 3

When you've found the pre-modern award, click on the link for weekly or daily hire. You might also need to choose the appropriate type of employment (junior, apprentice or trainee). This column is after the award code.

Clicking this link will take you to the tab to work out pay rates.

Step 4

Choose the employee's modern award classification from the drop-down menu. You can find more information on classifications from the modern award.

Choose which entitlements in the modern award apply to the employee. You can do this by clicking 'Yes' or 'No' or choosing options from the drop-down menu.

Then choose their pre-modern award classification and entitlements.

Step 5

The Base Rate Calculator works out the employee's minimum rate of pay. This includes 'follow the job' loading and increases from the annual wage review.

You'll find the results in the table called 'Your calculated base rate'.
