$19,500 recovered for Geelong truck drivers
Two employees at Geelong in regional Victoria have been back-paid a total of $19,500 following intervention by the Fair Work Ombudsman.
The largest recovery was $10,700 for a truck driver.
The 58-year-old male employee was underpaid overtime entitlements between January, 2001 and September, 2010.
After a Fair Work inspector contacted the business and explained its obligations, the employee was promptly reimbursed all money owed without the need for further action against the employer.
In a separate case, a 51-year-old male truck driver has been back-paid $8800 after an inspector discovered the employee had not been paid sick leave entitlements.
“It’s a fact that some businesses inadvertently breach workplace laws. When we find mistakes, we’re here to assist and give practical advice to employers on how to voluntarily fix them,” says Fair Work Ombudsman Nicholas Wilson.
“These businesses have now corrected the errors that led to the underpayments and put processes in place to ensure they will not happen again.”
The Fair Work Ombudsman recovered a total of $7.5 million back-pay for 3556 workers in Victoria last financial year.
