$75,000 recovered for Shepparton workers

Three workers in and around Shepparton in regional Victoria have been back-paid a total of $75,600 following intervention by the Fair Work Ombudsman.

The largest recovery was $60,000 for an agricultural worker underpaid overtime entitlements for almost nine years to May.

After a Fair Work inspector contacted the company and explained its obligations, the 62-year-old male employee was repaid all money owed.

In a separate case, a hairdresser was back-paid $9200 after an inspector found the 24-year-old female worker had been underpaid the minimum hourly rate between July, 2008 and June, 2011.

And a 23-year-old labourer was reimbursed $6400 after inspectors found he had been underpaid penalty rates between February, 2009 and March, 2011.

Fair Work Ombudsman Nicholas Wilson says each of the businesses has now corrected the errors that led to the underpayments and put processes in place to ensure they will not happen again.

“It’s a fact that some businesses inadvertently breach workplace laws. When we find mistakes, we’re here to help and give practical advice to employers on how to voluntarily fix them,” he said.
