Company fined for failing to provide employment records

The operator of a motel in NSW has been fined $500 for failing to provide Fair Work inspectors with staff employment records in 2009.

Ballina Island Resort Pty Ltd, which operates the Ballina Island Motor Inn, received the fine in the Federal Magistrates Court in Sydney.

Under workplace laws, employers must keep employment records for employees and former employees and provide them to Fair Work inspectors upon request.

Ballina Island Resort provided the requested records only after the Fair Work Ombudsman had launched its prosecution.

The Court dismissed the Fair Work Ombudsman’s allegation that Ballina Island Resort failed to issue pay slips to employees.

Employers or employees seeking assistance should contact the Fair Work Infoline on 13 13 94 or visit www.fairwork.gov.au. A free interpreter service is available on 13 14 50.
