Fair Work Ombudsman releases results for Royal Adelaide Show audit

Less than half the employers randomly audited at last year’s Royal Adelaide Show were compliant with workplace laws, the Fair Work Ombudsman revealed today.

Fair Work inspectors visited the show in September, 2010, to check record-keeping and pay slip practices and to ensure employees were being paid correctly.

Of a total of 188 employers randomly audited, inspectors found 89 businesses (47 per cent) were compliant, while 98 (52 per cent) recorded contraventions.

One employer remains under investigation.

Fair Work Ombudsman Executive Director Michael Campbell says most of the breaches relate to record-keeping, such as errors in payslip content and failure to maintain accurate time sheets.

However, one employer was also found to have underpaid two staff $730.

“These results suggest that some of these transient employers are either not familiar with their workplace obligations or are not taking them seriously enough,” Mr Campbell said.

The results were not as good as the findings of a similar audit the year before.

At the 2009 Royal Adelaide Show, the Fair Work Ombudsman audited 45 employers and found 33, or 72 per cent, were compliant.

A total of $7000 in underpaid wages was recouped for 69 employees.

Mr Campbell said while it was pleasing to find the number of underpayment matters was less, it was concerning that record-keeping and payslip contraventions were up.

The Fair Work Ombudsman has a number of tools and user-friendly resources on its website at www.fairwork.gov.au to assist employees and employers – including facilities to check minimum rates of pay and fact sheets on record keeping and payslip obligations.

Employers or employees seeking assistance or further information can also contact the Fair Work Infoline on 13 13 94 from 8am-6pm weekdays. A free interpreter service is available on 13 14 50.
