Central Coast workers back-paid almost $30,000
The Fair Work Ombudsman has recovered $29,000 for a number of NSW Central Coast workers who had been underpaid.
The largest underpayment was $16,000 for a butcher west of Gosford.
The worker lodged a complaint with the Fair Work Ombudsman after he was underpaid his hourly rate, penalty rates and accrued annual leave.
After Fair Work inspectors contacted the company and explained its obligations, the worker was immediately back-paid.
Other recent recoveries include:
- $7800 for a Toukley event co-ordinator underpaid overtime entitlements, and
- $5200 for an Erina accountant not paid in lieu of notice or long service leave entitlements.
Fair Work Ombudsman Executive Director Michael Campbell says that given the employers co-operated and voluntarily rectified the underpayments, there will be no further action against the company.
“We have a flexible, fair approach and our preference is always to work with employers to educate them and help them voluntarily rectify any non-compliance issues we identify,” Mr Campbell said.
“Underpayments like this illustrate why the Fair Work Ombudsman places such as strong focus on educating employers and assisting them to understand and comply with workplace laws.”
The Fair Work Ombudsman has a number of tools on its website - www.fairwork.gov.au - to assist employees and employers to check minimum rates of pay, including PayCheck and PayrollCheck.
