Fair Work Ombudsman recoups $16,500 back-pay for Moe childcare worker
A childcare worker at Moe in Victoria has been reimbursed $16,500 after an investigation by the Fair Work Ombudsman.
The worker lodged a complaint after she completed childcare qualifications but did not receive an increase in her minimum hourly rate.
The worker - aged 18 at the time - was also being underpaid her casual loading.
After Traralgon-based Fair Work inspectors visited the employer and explained its obligations, the worker was promptly back-paid all money owed.
Fair Work Ombudsman Executive Director Michael Campbell says that given the employer has co-operated and voluntarily rectified the issue, there will be no further action against the company.
“Our preference is always to work with employers to educate them and help them voluntarily rectify any non-compliance issues,” he said.
Mr Campbell says employers need to regularly review wage rates, entitlements and employees’ qualifications to ensure they are complying with workplace laws.
The Fair Work Ombudsman has a number of tools on its website - www.fairwork.gov.au - to assist employees and employers to check minimum rates of pay.
