Regulator recovers almost $250,000 in back-pay for Goldfields workers

A number of workers in Western Australia’s Goldfields region have been back-paid more than $242,000 after recent investigations by the Fair Work Ombudsman.

The largest recovery was $214,400 for 15 workers at a Goldfields mining equipment manufacturer.

The workers did not receive payment in lieu of notice, redundancy entitlements or annual leave on termination of their employment.
 
The biggest back-payment for an individual was $31,000. Other significant reimbursements to individual workers were $28,600, $26,000, $25,600 and $23,000.

After Kalgoorlie-based Fair Work inspectors visited the employer and explained its obligations, the workers were paid all outstanding entitlements.

Other recoveries include:

  •  $12,500 for a Kalgoorlie tradesman underpaid long service leave entitlements,\\
  • $8500 for a Kalgoorlie machine operator not paid in lieu of notice, annual leave or redundancy entitlements, and
  • $6800 for a Kalgoorlie casual shop assistant underpaid the minimum hourly rate.

Fair Work Ombudsman Executive Director Michael Campbell says that given the employers have co-operated and voluntarily back-paid the workers, there will be no further action against the companies.

“Our first preference is always to assist employers to voluntarily rectify any non-compliance issues we identify,” he said.

Since 2006 the Fair Work Ombudsman has recovered more than $111 million for Australian workers who were underpaid.
