Contract cleaners focus of national campaign

The Fair Work Ombudsman will write to more than 15,000 contractors in a new national campaign focussing on the cleaning industry.

Employers are being urged to positively embrace the campaign as an opportunity to improve their understanding of and compliance with workplace laws.

Key stakeholders, including employer groups and unions, have been briefed and new resources developed to assist the industry.

A dedicated page for the contract cleaning industry can now be found at www.fairwork.gov.au/cleaning.

Fair Work Ombudsman Executive Director Michael Campbell says the objective is to help employers understand recent changes to workplace laws, including the  introduction of Modern Awards and minimum National Employment Standards.

The focus will be on businesses holding contracts to clean offices and commercial buildings, residential homes, windows and various other types of property.

Hygiene and pollution-control businesses will be included, but not laundries, dry cleaners or retailers employing in-house cleaners.

The Fair Work Ombudsman conducts a number of proactive national campaigns targeted at specific industries each year.
