95 per cent of Kimberley-Pilbara employers compliant with record-keeping laws

Ninety-five per cent of Kimberley and Pilbara businesses randomly audited by the Fair Work Ombudsman are complying with record-keeping laws.

Fair Work inspectors visited 66 businesses in Broome, Port Hedland and Karratha earlier this year to check they were keeping proper time-and-wages records for their employees and issuing pay slips.

With 65 audits complete, only three businesses at Karratha were found to have some contraventions, but all have been voluntarily rectified.

Fair Work Ombudsman Executive-Director Michael Campbell says it is pleasing that so many employers are doing the right thing.

“Inspectors found employers were using professional payroll systems and were often members of their local chamber of commerce, which goes a long way to helping ensure compliance,” he said.

Mr Campbell says employers and business managers were provided with educative materials on new workplace laws, including the introduction of Modern Awards and the National Employment Standards.  

The Fair Work Ombudsman has a number of tools on its website - www.fairwork.gov.au - to assist employees and employers, including minimum rates of pay.

There are also templates for time-and-wages sheets, payslips and other types of employment records.

Small to medium-sized businesses without human resources staff can also ensure they are better equipped when hiring, managing and dismissing employees by using free template employment documentation with step-by-step instructions or accessing a series of Best Practice Guides.
