Fair Work Ombudsman recovers back-pay for 106 Ipswich workers
An Ipswich business has reimbursed 106 local workers a total of $18,000 after a routine investigation by the Fair Work Ombudsman found they were underpaid.
Fair Work inspectors audited the business and discovered that workers had been underpaid their minimum hourly and overtime penalty rates.
After the Fair Work Ombudsman contacted the company to explain its obligations, the workers were promptly back-paid the money they were owed.
Fair Work Ombudsman Queensland Director Julie Wade says as the employer fully co-operated with inspectors and voluntarily rectified the underpayments, there will be no further action.
“We have a flexible and fair approach and our preference is always to work with employers to educate them and help them voluntarily rectify any non-compliance issues,” Ms Wade says.
Ms Wade says the Fair Work Ombudsman can help employers and workers to understand their rights and obligations under new National Employment Standards and Modern Awards, which took effect on January 1.
“The new workplace landscape provides a comprehensive safety net of minimum employment conditions that underpin the whole system,” she said.
The Fair Work Ombudsman has a range of user-friendly resources that can help employers and workers comply with workplace laws and operate their workplace according to best practice.
Employers or employees seeking assistance should contact the Fair Work Infoline on 13 13 94 or visit www.fairwork.gov.au where payslip and record-keeping templates and other tools are available. For translations call 13 14 50.
The Fair Work Ombudsman promotes harmonious, productive and co-operative workplaces. It also monitors compliance with and investigates breaches of national workplace laws.
In Queensland this year, the Fair Work Ombudsman will visit up to 10,000 employers moving from the state to the national system to provide information and assistance.
