Random audits find 70 per cent pass rate for Mornington Peninsula employers

Seventy per cent of businesses randomly audited on the Mornington Peninsula are complying with workplace laws.

Fair Work Ombudsman inspectors checked the books of 81 retail and light industry employers between Seaford, Carrum Downs and Rosebud.

The audits uncovered breaches by 24 employers - or 30 per cent - relating mainly to non-compliance with record-keeping and pay slip requirements.

Fair Work Ombudsman Victorian Director Rhonda Murray says three employers were found to have underpaid four workers a total of $2567.

The Victorian office has a rolling program to randomly scrutinise employers in shopping centres and industrial parks.

Almost 80 per cent of 386 employers recently audited at Southland, Chadstone and Dandenong were also found to be compliant with their legal obligations.

However, in those cases, Fair Work inspectors also discovered underpayments of almost $18,000 for 18 employees.

Ms Murray says her office distributed information packs to more than 100 employers on the Mornington Peninsula before door-knocking businesses.

She says the level of compliance is encouraging, as was the willingness of those with breaches to voluntarily rectify them immediately.

Ms Murray says the exercise provided a good opportunity for the Fair Work Ombudsman to inform and educate employers about their responsibilities.

“It also helped to increase awareness among the workforce that they do have workplace rights and there is an Agency charged with enforcing them,” she said.

Workers and employers alike can contact the FWO Infoline on 13 13 94 or visit for assistance.

The Fair Work Ombudsman aims to promote harmonious, productive and co-operative workplaces. It also monitors compliance and investigates breaches of national workplace laws.
