On 16 May 2011, a full bench of Fair Work Australia issued a decision that it has reached preliminary conclusions about the making of an equal remuneration order for the Social, Community, Home Care and Disability Services Industry Award 2010.
This order was sought by unions to correct gender based disparity between the pay of Social and Community Service workers and employees in state and local government. Fair Work Australia has preliminarily agreed that such gender-based disparities do exist in the Social & Community Service industry.
However, Fair Work Australia wants to hear further submissions on the extent of changes to wage classifications needed to correct this. Fair Work Australia has urged parties to agree on a remedy before further hearings in August.
