How does the Leave Calculator work?

Under the National Employment Standards, annual and personal leave accumulate progressively throughout an eligible employee’s employment.

Note: the Leave Calculator uses a best practice method of calculation.

Leave Calculator Formulas

The Leave Calculator uses the following formulas to calculate leave:

For personal leave:

  • Divide the employee’s ordinary hours of work by 26.071428 (based on 10 days per year)

For annual leave:

  • Divide the employee’s ordinary hours of work by 13.035714 (based on 4 weeks per year)

For shift workers:

  • Annual leave accrual is calculated by dividing the number of ordinary hours worked by 10.428571 (based on 5 weeks per year).

User tip: Any unpaid leave or parental leave taken will affect an employee’s leave entitlement. This is because paid leave does not accumulate while the employee is on unpaid leave.
