The Leave Calculator can be used to calculate both annual and personal leave under the National Employment Standards. To correctly calculate an employee’s leave entitlements, you will need to enter:
- the start date of employment
- whether the employee is full-time or part-time, and whether they are a shift worker
- the days of the week that the employee works
- for part-time employees, the number of hours worked per week
- any unpaid or parental leave taken by the employee
- any paid leave taken by the employee.
Best Practice Tip
Employers must keep certain records about their employees, including records about leave taken and accumulated. It is best practice for employers to provide employees with written approval / refusal of any leave they request to take.
You can visit our Managing leave and hours of work templates page for an annual leave and long service leave application form and record-keeping templates for leave.
Employees should also keep a record of their employment start date and any paid or unpaid leave taken during their employment.
