Allowances

The Vehicle Award has a number of allowances that your employees may receive. These include allowances for tools, meals, handling money, and unpleasant work.

A summary of the allowances is available in the Pay and Conditions Guides and in clause 19-20 of the Vehicle Award. There are also allowances for drafting, planning and technical employees in clause 60 of the award.

For information on how to find your Pay and Conditions Guide, see the Pay and Conditions Guides section.

Allowances calculated on the standard rate

Some allowances in the Vehicle Award are calculated as a percentage of the standard rate. The standard rate is the minimum wage for the Level R6 classification for employees in the repair, service & retail stream, and the Level V5 classification for employees in the manufacturing stream and the drafting, planning and technical stream.

The standard rate may be updated on 1 July each year.

The standard rate for employees in all 3 streams is currently:

Standard rate  Effective 1 July 2013
 Weekly standard rate  $724.50
 Hourly standard rate  $19.07

Example

The first aid allowance under the Vehicle Award is 2% of the weekly standard rate. From 1 July 2013, the weekly standard rate is $724.50.

2% of $724.50 = $14.49

An employee who is qualified and appointed to carry out first aid will receive an additional $14.49 per week.

Uniforms and protective clothing

If you require employees to wear a uniform or protective clothing, you must:

  • supply the protective clothing and/or uniform and clean the uniform free of cost, or
  • reimburse the employees for the cost of buying and cleaning the clothing.

Tools

If you require employees to provide and maintain their own tools, they may be entitled to a tool allowance. Tradespeople, manufacturing employees, apprentices and carpenters are all entitled to a different tool allowance - check your Pay and Conditions Guide or clause 19.4 of the Vehicle Award for details.

If you provide your employees with tools, and they are lost because of an employee’s negligence, you can require the employee to replace or pay for the tools. You may also need to reimburse your employees for the cost of purchasing certain tools. See clause 23 for details.

There are special provisions for:

  • employees employed mainly to fit tyres and/or in the tyre retreading process - clause 23.1
  • drafting , planning and technical staff - clause 60.2

Employees working in the Northern Territory and Western Australia

If you have employees working in the Northern Territory or Western Australia, they may be entitled to a district allowance. See clause 20 of the Vehicle Award for details, and Contact us if you have any questions.
