What types of businesses are covered by the Vehicle Award?

The Vehicle Manufacturing, Repair, Services and Retail Award 2010 (Vehicle Award) applies to your employees if your business is involved in selling, repairing, servicing or manufacturing vehicles, fuel, parts and accessories. This includes:

  • selling, distributing, dismantling, wrecking, restoring, recycling, preparing for sale, storage, repairing, maintaining, towing, servicing, or parking of motor vehicles of all kinds (including caravans, trailers) or the equipment, parts, components and accessories for vehicles
  • selling, distributing or supplying running requirements for vehicles, including fuels, gas and oils
  • selling, handling, retreading, storing, distributing, fitting or repairing tyres
  • repairing and servicing motor vehicles in a motor vehicle rental business
  • manufacturing, assembling or repairing carriages, carts, wagons, trucks, motor cars, bodies, motorcycles, railway cars, tram cars, side cars or other vehicles, or parts, components and accessories
  • providing roadside or mobile service
  • driving school instruction
  • manufacturing, assembling, fabricating, installing, servicing, maintaining, reconditioning or repairing engines, vehicle servicing equipment and agricultural machinery or implements (this only applies if the Vehicle Industry Award 2000 applied to your business before 31 December 2009).

Who is excluded from the Vehicle Award?

The Vehicle Award has a number of exclusions including some employees in car parks, or employers who were covered by certain awards before 31 December 2009. Check clause 4 of the Vehicle Award to see if any exclusions apply to you.

Other awards that may apply to your employees

The Vehicle Award covers a range of different types of work, including tradespeople, salespeople, and cleaners. If you can’t find a classification for a particular employee, they may be covered by a different award. For example, clerical employees working for businesses in the vehicle industry are likely to be covered by the Clerks Award.
