Rosters

Rosters provide a schedule of your employees’ working hours - generally for a week, fortnight or month ahead. When you are preparing rosters for your employees, remember to keep in mind your hours of work and breaks obligations under the Security Award.
 
Your full-time and part-time security employees must work their ordinary hours in accordance with a roster which you are required to provide to them in advance. You can also choose to include your casual employees’ hours of work in a roster.

What does a roster need to include and where do you need to display it?

You must notify your employees of their ordinary hours of work, either by posting the roster on a noticeboard located at or near the workplace or by providing the roster electronically (such as by email). The roster should show:

  • the number of ordinary hours to be worked each week
  • the days of the week on which work is to be performed
  • the starting and finishing times of work for each day of the week.

You must give your employees a break of at least 8 hours in a row between the end of their ordinary hours of work on one day and the start of work on the next day.

Can I change the rosters?

You can change the roster by providing 7 days’ notice to your employees. Alternatively, you and your security employees can agree to change shifts with less than 7 days’ notice.

Your full-time and part-time security employees will be entitled to overtime rates if their hours of work are changed without providing 7 days’ notice, unless they have agreed to the change.

Rosters can’t be changed to avoid award obligations such as public holidays or penalty rates.

Breaks during a roster cycle

If you have adopted a rostering system in your workplace, you must provide your employees with the following breaks during their roster cycles. 

Length of roster period  Time off 
 3 weeks 3 breaks of 2 days (48 continuous hours off work per occasion)
 4 weeks 3 breaks of 3 days (72 continuous hours off work per occasion), or 4 breaks of 2 days (48 continuous hours off work per occasion)
 8 weeks 6 breaks of 3 days (72 continuous hours off work per occasion), or 9 breaks of 2 days (48 continuous hours off work per occasion)
