Part-time employee entitlements

You can hire security employees on a part-time basis to suit your business. Part-time work arrangements can be beneficial for both you and your employees. For example, your employees may be able to enjoy greater work-life balance, and you can roster them during your business’s busiest periods.

Your part-time security employees get the same hourly rate and conditions of employment as full-time employees performing the same type of work. Part-time employees also receive a pro rata amount of annual leave and personal leave, which means a proportionate amount based on their hours of work.

When your part-time employee starts working for your business, you can agree in writing on regular hours by specifying the roster that the employee will work (including the actual starting and finishing times for each shift) and the days or parts of days that the employee will not be rostered.

When your part-time employees work at any time that is not included in their agreement or regular roster, it is overtime and paid at the overtime rate of pay.

Visit Minimum and maximum shift lengths for more information about minimum hours of work for your part-time employees.

Example

Phil is employed on a part-time basis as a security guard for Hawkins Security Pty Ltd. He works 20 hours per week, travelling between several establishments and monitoring the properties. Under the Security Award, he is classified as a Security Officer Level 2.

Phil’s minimum hourly rate of pay is the same as for a full-time employee in the same classification (i.e. Level 2) under the Security Award.

After working at Hawkins Security Pty Ltd for 12 months, Phil has accumulated 80 hours, or the equivalent of four weeks, of annual leave and 40 hours, or the equivalent of two weeks, of personal leave.
