Hours of work

Ordinary hours of work are the hours that you and your employees agree to be their normal and regular pattern of work within the limits explained below. Ordinary hours do not include overtime hours.

The ordinary hours of work in the Hair and Beauty Award must not be more than an average of 38 hours per week and may be worked during the following spread of hours:

 Monday to Friday Saturday  Sunday
 7.00am - 9.00pm  7.00am - 6.00pm  10.00am - 5.00pm

Your hairdressing and beauty employees can be rostered to work a maximum of 9 ordinary hours on any day, except they can be rostered to work up to 10.5 ordinary hours one day each week. They can also (by mutual agreement in writing) be rostered to work a second 10.5 hour day in the same week.

Ordinary hours can be worked 5 days in a single week. If ordinary hours are worked on 6 days in one week, then they can be worked on no more than 4 days during the following week.

All employees are entitled to at least a 12 hour rest break between finishing work on one day and starting work the next day.

Any hours worked in excess of an average of 38 hours per week are overtime and must be paid at overtime rates. Part-time employees also receive overtime rates for all hours worked in excess of their agreed hours of work. For more information see the overtime section.

Note: If you require your employees to start work earlier than their allocated shift in order to perform any duties such as setting up, or stay back to perform any duties such as packing up or attending a compulsory team meeting after their shift has finished, then they must be paid for this time.
