Organising hours of work

When can ordinary hours be worked?

Under the Fast Food Award, ordinary hours can be worked on any day of the week.

There are various penalty rates that apply when employees work between 9pm - midnight and after midnight Monday to Friday, and for all hours worked on Saturdays, Sundays and public holidays. Visit Finding the right pay for tools to help you calculate penalty rates for your employees.

Minimum and maximum shift lengths

Your fast food employees can be rostered to work up to a maximum of 11 ordinary hours per day. If an employee works more than 11 hours in any shift they must be paid overtime rates.

Your part-time and casual employees must be rostered to work at least 3 hours each shift. This means that they are entitled to be paid for 3 hours per shift, even if they work less than 3 hours.

Rosters

Rosters provide a schedule of your employees’ working hours - generally for a week, fortnight or month ahead. When you are preparing rosters for your employees, remember to keep in mind the break obligations under the Fast Food Award.

You should display rosters for your employees in an obvious place, such as a noticeboard, and give your employees notice if you change the roster.
