Ordinary hours of work are the hours that you and your employees agree to be their normal and regular pattern of work. Ordinary hours do not include overtime hours.
Full-time employees
Under the Fast Food Award, a full-time employee is an employee who is engaged to work an average of 38 ordinary hours per week. This can be worked in one of the following ways:
- 38 hours in one week
- 76 hours in two consecutive weeks
- 114 hours in three consecutive weeks
- 152 hours in four consecutive weeks.
Ordinary hours must be worked over no more than 5 days per week. However, an employee can work 6 days in one week, if their ordinary hours in the next week are worked over no more than four days.
Any hours worked in excess of ordinary hours or outside the maximum number of days are overtime and must be paid at overtime rates.
Part-time employees
Part-time employees work less than 38 ordinary hours per week and have reasonably predictable hours of work. You and your part-time employees must agree, in writing, on a regular pattern of work; see the Part-time employee hours section for more information.
Any hours worked in excess of the hours agreed in writing (or as varied) are overtime and must be paid at overtime rates.
Casual employees
Casual employees can work flexible and irregular hours to suit their personal circumstances and the needs of your business. See the Casual employee entitlements section for more information.
Note: If you require your employees to start work earlier than their allocated shift in order to perform any duties such as setting up, or stay back to perform any duties such as packing up or attending a compulsory team meeting after their shift has finished, then this time is included in their hours of work and they must be paid for it.
